Today's lecture was interesting. Learning about composition and what makes up composition. I must say having to come up with sounds that we think resemble point, line, shape/form, color, texture, space, and value was hard. Yet when we did it, it was actually fun and creative. To think of composition as writing, music, nature, visual, dance, and theater is also something I never thought about. But when thought about composition is in all of those. Whether you are composing a song or composing a story it is still composition.
The first assignment was weird. Having to make something out of newspaper that holds a cinder block was difficult. I, myself, would have never in a million years thought about constructing an object out of newspapers that would hold something that heavy. Then in class we were given the assignment to do just that. I immediately thought this is never going to work. There is no way that newspapers can hold that much weight. Well I began with my object. I thought about how to start. I knew that the newspaper had to be sturdy enough to hold the cinder block flat enough so it wouldn't tip over or collapse. So I thought, take small strips of newspaper and roll them up to make a center. Tape them together so that they don't move and they hold well. Then put two newspapers around them for a flat surface. My next idea was for height. I took five rolled up newspapers and taped them together then taped them to the flat box i had already made. This object was flat enough on the top and sturdy enough to hold the cinder block with out collapsing or falling over.
Now I believe that given the materials and the time to do something, you can create anything to hold a cinder block. Even if it is barely using any thing at all.
